I am extremely concerned by the Government’s proposal to reintroduce extradition cooperation with Hong Kong.
Since the imposition of the National Security Law by Beijing in 2020, it is clear that Hong Kong’s legal system can no longer be regarded as independent or compatible with the principles of justice and democratic accountability. Peaceful campaigners have been arrested, political freedoms dismantled, and the rule of law undermined.
To proceed with legal cooperation in this context risks sending the wrong message—that the UK is willing to overlook serious human rights concerns in pursuit of diplomatic or procedural convenience. It undermines our commitment to freedom, due process, and the values we claim to defend on the international stage.
I do not support this proposal and will be raising my concerns with all those in positions of influence to press for it to be reconsidered. The UK should not be enabling a regime that is actively persecuting those who stand up for democracy.
