Sutton is undoubtedly one of the safer Boroughs in London, but we are not content with being judged against Hackney and Croydon. There is a real fear of crime in Sutton that needs to be tackled. Inward investment into our town centres will be hard to achieve and will not be as effective if we cannot ensure that a wider range of people feel safe when away from the security of their own home. We want to ensure that the police have all of the tools at their disposal that they need to do the job that they want to do. We will look at what more we can do as a Local Authority to support our Police Service and how we can work closer together on our streets and in our parks. There should not be any no-go areas in the Borough. Our town centres need to be inviting for all to use at any time and our parks will flourish if families, dog walkers and young people feel able to use them alongside each other throughout the day. We will not encourage people to get out of their cars if they feel intimidated on public transport. Although we need to have a strict view on all crimes, including antisocial behaviour, an effective policy cannot end there. What more can we do to offer young people facilities that they actually want to use and will use? We cannot write off a generation because of a minority. We will look at effective projects around London that have been shown to work. |
