The supply of affordable housing is one of the greatest pressures in London today. Central targets are often blunt instruments that adversely affect outer London Boroughs such as Sutton. We will seek effective methods to protect our back gardens and family homes whilst providing sensitive development to meet the needs of local people. Our infrastructure    cannot be overlooked when looking ahead at Strategic Planning.

Many people would welcome the chance to get out of their cars and travel in other ways but cannot see a viable alternative for the majority of their journeys. Parts of the Borough have excellent transport links around the neighbourhood and up to London. However, this is by no means true in so many areas. Road safety must remain paramount in our thoughts but we will review schemes throughout the Borough looking to see if the correct balance between safety, convenience and pollution has been struck.

We face a significant challenge in bringing our social housing up to a reasonable standard of repair. 50% of our housing stock needs considerable attention to meet Government targets. We need to seek solutions to this urgent problem which will also take into account those people that have invested in their own property under the Right to Buy scheme to ensure that they are not unfairly penalised with disproportionate bills. The group will also look at ways of increasing the provision of social housing throughout the Borough.
