We are fortunate to live in a truly green Borough with some 1,500 acres of parks and open spaces. The Council looks after around 66,000 trees. We have a responsibility to protect and enhance our community for generations to come. We also have to act now to play our part with respect to the global environment. Changes in national and European legislation mean that we are facing significant pressures on waste management. As well as recycling more waste, we need to be innovative in our approach to reducing the amount of waste that is thrown away and collected in the first place. Solutions need to be cost-effective and simple in order to ensure full participation by residents. The second part of the remit of this group is to look at communities, however they might be defined. The Borough is made up of a disparate group of villages and towns, each with their own characteristics. Attention is often concentrated on Sutton Town Centre at the expense of outlying centres such as Wallington High Street. Community Sustainability also means ensuring that everyone can be involved in the day to day life of Sutton and be able to have their say in decisions made on their behalf by the Local Authority. The group will review the role that the voluntary sector plays in this and how businesses help shape their local area. |
