Each year, Sutton appears at the top of the league tables for schools. We have an excellent network of schools including six secondary schools that select some or all of the pupils on academic ability. This is an enviable record of which we are very proud. However, this does not mean that there are not difficult issues to tackle or that we can stand still with regard to standards.

Our Grammar Schools are amongst the best in the country. We need to investigate ways to ensure that all of our able children from all parts of the Borough are benefiting from this excellence that is on their doorstep. We also need to ensure that all schools in Sutton achieve the very best standards, giving all Sutton children the opportunity to receive a first rate education.

The issue of Special Education Needs (SEN) is one which requires particular attention. Increasing numbers of statemented children, in particular with ASD have meant that we have had a shortfall of SEN school places within the Borough. This can lead to long journeys for the children who may also be separated from their parents for long stretches. For the Local Authority, the Education budget comes under severe pressure from the cost of private provision and transportation costs

We will look at library services and adult education. As well as providing career skills, we need to enable people to keep up with a technologically changing world.
